The Four Potentials of Tarot Meditation

The Four Potentials of Tarot Meditation

The Four Potentials Meditation is an exercise to explore how the aces apply to you. How they work their magic through you, where they are in beautiful universal alignment, and where they may need a little help.

This meditation (as well as a full series of numbers of the Tarot meditations), was put together for a class I was teaching. The format was originally intended to be read or recorded and played back to the meditators with the meditators gently opening their eyes and recording what they saw at the points indicated, before sinking back down into the visualisation.

It is perfectly feasible to use the Four Potentials meditation as a meditative journalling exercise, jotting down your observations at each pause point. Make yourself familiar with the text (no need to memorize), enter a meditative state and quietly and mindfully work through each stage.

The Aces of the Tarot

You may enjoy having a quiet, meditative soundtrack playing as you enter the realm of The Fool.

Sit comfortably by your writing table, and have your paper and pen close at hand.

Take three deep belly breaths and take your attention to your feet – tell them to relax, to your ankles – tell them to relax. Tell your calfs and shins to relax, your knees and thighs. Buttocks, lower abdomen and stomach – tell each to relax. Lower and mid back, waist and solar plexus. Tell them to relax. Upper back and shoulder blades – relax. The front of the chest and across the collar bones – relax. Spend a bit longer breathing into your neck and shoulders – tell them to relax and give them a little time to do so……. Arms hands and fingers relax. The spot at the base of the skull – relax. Back of the head, sides of the head and ears. Relax….. Scalp relax. Forehead relax. Eyes cheeks, mouth and face relax.

Feel your connection to the earth, and your connection to the cosmos, visualise a bubble of protection around you – anything that is untruthful or does not serve your highest good cannot enter.

Aces are the potentials in the Tarot. Each ace holds the possibilities of every card in its suit.

Now we will ask the Fool, the part of ourselves that is objective. Our higher self, about our potentials.

Visualise The Fool from your favourite deck standing by you. Take notice of which side of you that the Fool chooses to stand.

The Fool stands holding the Ace of Swords from your deck in the brilliant white light of your crown chakra.

Ask the Fool to tell you which potential you are not fulfilling in the cerebral or energetic realms and pay careful attention to his reply.

(Pause 45 seconds)

Ask the Fool to show you why you aren’t taking advantage of this potential – he will show you one or two cards from your Tarot deck in response to your question – this is your answer. Pay careful attention to the cards The Fool shows you, but don’t worry if you can’t understand right now what these cards mean. It will come to you in due course.

(Pause 45 seconds)

Ask the Fool from your deck to show you how you can fulfil the potential. You will be shown one or two  cards from your deck in response to your question. Again, pay careful attention to the cards shown to you, but don’t worry if you can’t decipher their message just now. Their meaning will come to you in time.

(Pause 45 seconds)

Ask The Fool to show you your strengths in this area and notice which card or cards The Fool shows you.

(Pause 45 seconds)

Write down the answer The Fool gave to the first question, and the cards given to you in response to the subsequent questions in your quiet state, and then sit back, taking three deep belly breaths sink back into the realm of The Fool (skip this if you have been writing as you go).

The Fool stands by you and holds the Ace of cups from your deck right in the centre of your heart chakra, it is bathed in strong, but gentle green light.

Ask the Fool what potentials of your heart you aren’t fulfilling right now. Pay careful attention to his reply.

(Pause 45 seconds)

The Fool stands by you and holds the Ace of Wands in your solar plexus chakra, just below your rib cage. The Ace of wands is bathed in brilliant sunshine yellow light.

(Pause 45 seconds)

Thank the Fool for the advice and insights given to you, and bid him farewell for now.

Wiggle toes and be aware of your feet,

Shift position and be aware of your bottom and the back of your thighs on the chair,

Wiggle your fingers and give yourself a gentle tap on the head to bring yourself firmly back into the physical realm.

You can dissolve your protection if you want to.

Now is a good time to journal any further thoughts or insights, to look over the cards that The Fool showed you, or simply to have a cup of tea and a walk outside, returning to your notes for further exploration later.

The Cards featured in this blog post are from the Zillich Tarot by Christine Zillich, published by US Games.

This post has been sitting around in my documents file forever and a day – a telesummit call by Ferol Humphrey with Kim Wilbourne yesterday on the 9s of the Tarot inspired me to post it.
